MAYS RYDER is many things...a man, a musician, a brother, a son. Above all these, however, he is a Watcher and a Hunter. Born into a family of Hunters, hate was a legacy, a religion passed from Mays Sr. to his sons...Jonah, Trent, Perry, and little Mays Jr. Taught at his father's knee about the Immortal blight, the scourge of the Game, he grew into a child poisoned by his legacy. Crippled by asthma, chronic pain, and a delicate constitution, he was doted on by his mother and left his father living in constant fear that each day could be his last...neither of them ever realizing that young Mays became sickest when he was subjected to the propaganda of the Hunters or the lessons in how to best an Immortal in combat.

His half-life went on until he was sixteen when he met an Immortal for the first time...witnessing a Challenge in an alley behind his favorite arcade, he found cover and watched as one Immortal took another's head, then as the winner, who had spotted him, came to him and asked if he was all right. The man treated him like a human being...and as they parted ways, Mays having sworn to keep his secret, he was left to wonder how it was possible to hate them all when clearly there were those a human could trust.

Doubt gave him strength...and in strength, Mays found his way.

Driven by his own questions and a chance encounter that introduced him to the world of music for the first time, his health improved in leaps and bounds. Within six months, he was playing on the school basketball team and wildly popular at school as a guitar virtuoso. He even grew strong enough to join his father and brothers on the hunt, but with every question he dared to ask himself and every head he took, he grew less and less sure that his family was right.

At twenty two, he met his first Watcher. At twenty four, he used the card she'd given him to turn his family in.

Informing the Watchers of his family's movements, he was taken in during an ambush that ended with his father dead and his eldest brother wounded. With the cries of his brothers swearing vengeance on him ringing in his ears, he was imprisoned and judged by the Council, where he was given a chance to prove himself as an ally. Apprenticing with the Watchers for many years, he was finally entrusted with his own charge as a true Watcher in 2008 when he was given the rare opportunity to Watch not one, but two Immortals...Timothy Hughes and Salvatore Vieri.
